5 Black Brits you should know about

Black history month is here in the UK and it’s important to know and celebrate these 5 important people who are thriving in their field.

  1. Maggie Aderin-Pocock- Space scientist and science educator

  • She is an honorary research associate of University College London‘s Department of Physics and Astronomy.
  • In 2020 she was awarded the Institute of Physics William Thomson, Lord Kelvin Medal[3] and Prize for her public engagement in physics. 
  • She is the first black woman to win a gold medal in the Physics News Award.
  • She is a pioneering figure in communicating science to the public, specifically school children.
  • Her company, Science Innovation Ltd, engages children and adults through its “Tours of the Universe” a programme that explains about the science of space.

2. Candice Brathwaite- Author, Journalist and TV Presenter

  • Born in 1988, Candice often appears offering style advice on LORRAINE (ITV) and has designed a bestselling handbag collection in collaboration with sustainable accessories label BEEN London.
  • Both her books ‘I’m not your baby mother’ (2020) and ‘Cut both ways’ (2022) made it to the Sunday times bestseller list.
  • She currently serves as a co host to the ‘confessions podcast’ along side content creator Coco Sarel.

3. Clint Ogbenna- Creator and Founder of popular streetwear brand CORTEIZ

  • Born in 1996, Clint launched Corteiz, RTW (rulestheworld) in 2017.
  • The brand’s logo of Alcatraz Island has blown up and is now spotted everywhere.
  • Corteiz has been frequently sighted by celebrities such as Drake, Central cee, stormzy and Dave.
  • In, February 2023, Corteiz unveiled its biggest move yet by revealing a partnership with Nike that includes a pair of Air Max 95s.

  • 4. Oluwagbemisola Okunlola- CEO, fashion designer and founder of women’s fashion brand, Alonuko

  • Born in 1994, Okunlola, commonly known as ‘Gbemi’, recognised her creative flair, love for fashion and meticulous eye for detail at the age of 11,
  • Alonuko products are created to work with the female form, not to hide imperfections or flaws but to accentuate desired features.
  • Her bridal gowns have garnered a lot of attraction on social media with users on twitter saying’ if its not in an Alonuko dress, I ain’t getting married’.

 

  • What separates alonuko from the rest is that she uses dark skin tone mesh for some of her designs, which is such an important factor because darker skin women usually struggle to find the right skin tone mesh that blends with their skin.

  • Stars such as Danielle brooks ( actress) and Leign anne pinnock( singer, Songwriter) have been spotted wearing Alonuko’s wedding designs.

5. Dr Donald Palmer- Immunologist

Royal Society

  • Born in 1962, Palmer is an Associate Professor of Immunology at Royal Veterinary College where he researches aging of the immune system.

  • Palmer has over 45 scientific publications and has made novel discoveries of senescent cells in the thymus of older animals and observed age-related differences in phenotype and function of thymocytes.

  • He has completed his PhD at King’s College London and two postdoctoral fellowships at Cancer Research UK and Imperial College.

  • Palmer teaches a Biology Masterclass for Year 12 and 13 students that includes lectures, practicals, as well as guidance on university applications.

  • He is on the Editorial Advisory Board for Immunology News and is also a member of the British Society for Research on Ageing.
