It’s in the chicken!

This scene in the film was iconic. Slick Charles, Jamie foxx’s character knew something was strange when he realised that Fontaine (John Boyega) never laughs or smiles. Immediately, he looks around the restrauant and realises that everyone is also laughing uncontrollably. He quickly warns yo yo (Teyonah Parris) and Fontaine that the government have put substances in the chicken as well. That’s-why people can’t get enough of it.

Automatically, this took me back to summer 2019 were People were losing their minds to Popeyes’ Chicken Sandwich . Across America, every Popeye restrauant were met with Long queues. Fights broke out amongst customers. Popeyes Staff dealt with abuse from customers.

Straighter Is Greater!

Throughout the film, we see hair advertisements being used to brainwash black women to straighten their hair.

In reality, Black Hair is perceived as being a stigma in society. Black women have to deal with texturism.

Texturism is a preference for hair with smoother/looser texture and the discrimination against people with kinkier, coarse hair within the same race. Looser curls or softer hair is idealised for being in proximity with the European beauty standard

Black people are the original Lab rats!

Experimenting on Black People isn’t a conspiracy. Throughout history there has been historical evidence to prove that Black people were experimented on .

A prime example of this is the infamous Tuskegee study of untreated syphilis in Black men by The United States public health service. The Syphilis experiment at Tuskegee was an ethically study conducted between 1932 and 1972. The purpose of this study was to observe the natural history of untreated syphilis. Although the African Americans who participated in the study were told that they were receiving free health care from the federal government of the United States, this turned out to be fake.

It’s Difficult for Tyrone/ Fontaine to Succeed

Young black people are not encouraged to find or create a better life for themselves. In the film, we see Tyrone or Fontaine as a drug dealer who lives the same day over and over again. It’s like his neighbourhood is stunting his growth. There are no signs of affluence. Unfortunately, we see this in reality. In the UK, young black people are three times more likely to be unemployed than their white counterparts.
