Ten Years On: Remembering Mr Pettifer’s Light

Mr James Pettifer was a joy. He lit up the room wherever he went. I’ll never forget hearing the dreadful news of his passing on Friday 17th April 2015.

The words felt untrue to my ears.

It was my final year in high school. GCSEs were just a couple of weeks away.
It felt right that we had to put our pens to paper, work hard, and pass our exams.

And we did just that.

2015 was a strange yet wonderful year. To think that it’s been a decade since his passing feels peculiar to me, because the memories still feel fresh.

What I Learned from Mr Pettifer

1. The Importance of Being Kind

Mr Pettifer had a kind heart — always ready to help, always willing to listen.
He made people feel seen. Heard. Cared for.
In a world that can sometimes feel cold or overwhelming, kindness is more than a trait — it’s a gift. And it’s one we can all give.

2. Putting Yourself Out There is Key

He was bold, warm, and always present. Whether it was his involvement in the cricket club or his daily interactions at school, he showed us that life is richer when we engage with it fully.
He made our school feel alive.

That taught me something: don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.

3. Spreading Joy Makes Life Easier

There wasn’t a day Mr Pettifer wasn’t smiling or cracking jokes.
Geography was challenging for me — but somehow, he made it fun. He made it light.
Joy can feel like a small thing, but its impact is huge.
Even when life is hard — and let’s be honest, it often is — spreading joy can make it easier for everyone. Including yourself.

10 Years On

As we commemorate 10 years since Mr Pettifer’s passing, one thing remains true:

He will forever be in our hearts.
His impact was momentous.
The love he had for us will continue to radiate in our lives forever.

Thank you, Mr Pettifer — for your kindness, your joy, your light.
You’re missed. You’re remembered. You’re still shining.
